The Tests

A doctor or nurse will talk to you about your reasons forcondoms attending.  They will ask you a number of questions including some personal sexual details. Although this may be embarrassing it is very important that we have the correct information on which to base our tests and treatment.

  • You will then normally have a full genital examination.
  • If you have any other issues relating to your sexual health that you would like to discuss please let us know.
  • Interpreters can be arranged if required.
  • The tests taken in the clinic will vary from person to person depending upon their problem. Swabs will be taken from the vagina, neck of womb (cervix), urethra (urinary opening) and also from the  back passage (rectum) and throat if appropriate. A freshly passed first urine sample is usually requested from men to test for chlamydia.

  • Our routine examination includes: Swabs for gonorrhoea and Chlamydia also Blood tests for HIV and syphilis.Staff in the clinic can use a microscope and may be able to give you an instant diagnosis and treatment.
  • Other tests will be sent to the laboratory. We will contact you by phone if the result suggest you have an infection or text your mobile phone in 3 weeks following the appointment if your results do not require any further action.  Treatment is given to you free of charge before you leave the clinic.  It will normally take the form of tablets, cream or pessaries.
  • Gay and bisexual men will be offered free vaccination for Hepatitis B
