AIN

 What is AIN?

AIN is anal intra-epithelial neoplasia. This means that skin in the anus (bum hole) has become abnormal usually due to wart (HPV) infection.  The problem with the abnormal skin is that if left untreated, it can develop into cancer over 10 years. Anal cancer is rapidly becoming a problem in men with HIV infection. What do I need to look out for?

·       Unusual lumps or ulcers in or around your anus or bum.

·       Discomfort in or around your anus.

·       Unexplained bleeding from your anus.

·       Lots of anal warts (especially ones which go inside.

What do I do? Inform your HIV doctor who can examine the area and decide whether you need a referral. If you do have AIN there are some new medical treatments (creams) which seem to get rid of the abnormal skin and prevent the development of cancer. You may be referred to Mr Farrands, a surgeon for a more extensive examination.

How can I prevent AIN The most important issue to   recognise the problem Make sure you examine your own anus regularly for lumps or bumps. If you have anal warts, don’t be embarrassed, you need to discuss this with your doctor.   If you don’t feel able to discuss with your HIV doctor, make an appointment in the Wilde clinic or discuss with one of the Lawson unit nurses.
